Born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1907, Charles Eames studied architecture at Washington University in St. Louis and designed a number of homes and churches in collaboration with various partners. His work caught the attention of Eliel Saarinen, who in 1938 offered him a scholarship to the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. Eames was appointed head of Cranbrook's industrial design department that same year.
